Assateague Island - August 2000
We got up early one morning, packed the car with camping gear, strapped the surfboards on the roof
and drove eight hours to Assateague Island, a barrier island off the coast of Maryland. Camping is
possible in the National Seashore area, in wonderful, private sites amongst the dunes, a couple of
hundred metres walk from the access road and a couple of hundred metres back from the beach. Wild
Sika deer and wild horses wander around, the horses even walking through the surf on the beach.
